Dear friends,
Today, we gather to reflect upon the profound wisdom found in the "Book of Commencements." We have heard the words of the higher power, a force that both created and watches over our world, a power beyond our comprehension. In this sacred text, we find guidance on one of the most significant gifts we have been given: the power of choice.
In the beginning, the higher power looked upon the world and observed the actions of its inhabitants. It recognized that we, as human beings, are capable of both great good and great harm. This awareness of our potential, both uplifting and destructive, serves as the cornerstone of our journey today.
The higher power spoke, reminding us of the precious gift of free will. We have the liberty to choose our own actions and shape our own destinies. Yet, with this freedom comes an undeniable truth: our choices carry consequences, and they can bring either blessings or curses into our lives.
These words echo in our hearts because we have seen the effects of our own actions. Our words and deeds have the power to build up or tear down, to bring joy or cause pain. When we act selfishly or seek to harm others, we hurt not only them but also ourselves. The higher power reminds us that every action, no matter how small, has a ripple effect, and the harm we cause will eventually return to us.
It's natural to feel a sense of fear and awe when faced with the weight of our actions and the knowledge that we have all sinned and fallen short of the higher power's standards. We have all caused harm in some way, and guilt and shame often weigh heavily on our hearts.
But take heart, dear friends, for the higher power offers us another precious gift: forgiveness. When we recognize our mistakes, seek to make amends, and endeavor to do better, we can find healing and restoration. Forgiveness is the path to wholeness, and it allows us to rebuild what was broken.
So, we resolve to live by the teachings of the higher power: to treat others with kindness and compassion, to seek wisdom and understanding, and to practice forgiveness and humility. We acknowledge that we will still make mistakes, but we can always turn back to the higher power, seeking forgiveness and the strength to choose actions that bring blessings instead of curses.
In this way, we live our lives with purpose and intention. We recognize that our actions have consequences, but we also understand that we have the power to choose our path. We seek to bring blessings to others through our actions and to create a better world for ourselves and future generations.
The higher power watches over us, guiding and encouraging us, reminding us always of the power of our choices, and the importance of love, forgiveness, and compassion. We are not alone in this journey.
So, let us carry forth the wisdom of the "Book of Commencements" in our hearts. Let us choose actions that bring blessings, that heal wounds, and that create a world filled with love and understanding. And let us always remember the profound power of our choices. Amen.
